Evaluating the Effectiveness of BST’s Leading With Safety approach: A Single-Site Case Study

CHART - Before and After - Working with Leadership at All LevelsThis 530-employee chemical plant enlisted BST’s help to augment its already strong safety performance. The goal was both to meet a corporate goal of achieving a .5 recordable rate within two yearsand to improve the functioning and integration of the site's existing behavior-based safety initiative. BST developed a four-stage approach beginning with a comprehensive culture evaluation using the Organizational Culture Diagnostic Instrument (OCDI), leadership development activities for site managers down to the supervisor level, exposure-recognition skills for team leaders, and finally reviving the site’s longstanding employee-driven safety effort.

Within 12 months of starting the intervention, the company's baseline incident rate had dropped to under 0.5 achieving a rate better than required by the corporate mandate more than a year ahead of schedule. In addition, the site achieved measurable improvements in both culture and leadership diagnostic factors, which helped the site to maintain its low recordable rates for more than 3 years.
