BST’s Leading With Safety® Approach Produces Nearly 40% Greater Improvement in Injury Rates than Behavior-Based Safety Alone

When studying the effectiveness of BAPP® technology we were surprised by the variability in improvement across the 153 organizations. Some got results quickly, almost immediately, and maintained them over the five-year period. Others reduced incident frequency by an average of 80% over the first two years. Still others took several years to start to improve but eventually got the results they wanted. However a few got virtually no results.

Results when combining focus on leaderships, climate and culture with employee engagement CHARTWe designed several studies aimed at the question, “Why do some organizations do well with safety improvement initiatives while others do poorly or fail?” This line of research consistently pointed to Leadership and Culture as being critical to success. Since leaders create and manage culture, we knew that we help our clients achieve even better outcomes with BAPP® technology if we work with each organization's leaders to strengthen their safety leadership, particularly around their BAPP® implementations.

In 2005, we extended our BAPP® safety outcome study to this new group of clients who not only used our BAPP® technology, but who also had us work 1:1 with at least 3 of the top leaders in their organization on safety leadership development concurrently with their BAPP® implementations. To date we have tracked 9 organizations who have been using BAPP® technology for at least one year. On average, these organizations achieved 61% improvement in the first year, more than double the improvement the clients with BAPP® initiatives alone achieved.
