Comprehensive Behavior-based Safety at the Shop Floor
BST's approach to exposure reduction at the Working Interface, The Behavioral Accident Prevention Process® (BAPP®), is a flexible, systematic, and comprehensive method for improving workplace safety. By focusing upstream on exposure, the technology produces unprecedented, sustainable results, as well as meaningful employee engagement and ownership. There are four key elements to BST's behavior-based approach:

Identify Critical Behaviors • We work with a steering team made up of key employees to review a selection of recent incident reports and other information and find behaviors critical to safe performance. Committee members then define each identified behavior in operational terms and include them on a data sheet. Gather Data • Trained employee observers then use the data sheet to measure levels of workplace exposure. The definitions provide an objective measure and foster a new vocabulary for safety. Observers perform regular, no-name observations on their peers and provide real-time performance feedback. |
Provide Feedback • After gathering data, observers have informal discussions with their coworkers about the safe and at-risk behaviors they observed. The observer reinforces safe performance and discovers the reasons behind the at-risk activities. The data is recorded is then entered and analyzed by Rincon® software, BST's proprietary data tracking tool. Posted reports and charts of safety performance provide additional, ongoing feedback.
Use Data to Remove Barriers • Barrier removal uses observation data to target those areas where workers are exposed to risk. Through analysis, trends can be uncovered based on user-defined variables. The team also uses the observers' written comments to identify the number and kinds of remedies needed to make an impact.
