Behavioral Accident Prevention Process® (BAPP®) Technology
Sustainable Mechanisms for Managing Exposure to Risk
BST’s Behavioral Accident Prevention Process® (BAPP®) helps organizations to assess and leverage the complex combination of conditions, management systems, and actions by people that influence injury causation. At over 2,000 locations around the world, BAPP® has enabled organizations to achieve new levels of safety performance excellence.
What Makes BAPP® Different?
Many basic behavior-based safety processes rely on the mechanism of reinforcement as the way to change behavior. However, reinforcement alone cannot change behaviors that are driven by systems issues such as procedures, equipment, and facility design.
BAPP® offers a broader approach focused on all aspects of the working environment that influence injury. It ensures greater impact and sustainability for safety initiatives by providing:
- Elements specifically designed to address behaviors not within the control of workers (non-enabled behaviors).
- Tracking of all the components of the working interface, using data captured in BAPPTrack® Software, to identify systems and conditions as well as practices that are producing exposure.
- Upstream measures of both safety performance and process quality, through such tools as the DataLink Subscription and BAPP® Enhancement Services.
- Mechanisms, such as Leading With Safety planning sessions and workshops for senior management, to address safety culture and attitude, as well as behavior.
- Efficient consideration of the entire pool of exposures in the work place, not just a few items at a time.
How Does BAPP® Work?
To accurately measure and intervene in the working interface, BAPP® ensures that organizations build the four essential components of a sustainable employee-driven safety system. Executed in collaboration with key constituencies within your organization, BAPP®’s planning, assessment and implementation mechanisms enable your organization to:
- Identify the critical safe activities
- Gather data on the performance of those activities
- Provide ongoing feedback
- Remove barriers
A Customized Approach
BST recognizes that while best practices can and should be followed in all organizations, each will need an implementation strategy tailored to its specific requirements. To achieve this, we work intensely but efficiently to obtain a full understanding of all the factors that make your organization unique. Selecting carefully among many proven configurations of our expertise. we then tailor our approach accordingly to ensure our solutions will maximize your progress toward your highest-priority safety performance goals.
For example, building internal expertise is one way organizations can cost-effectively maximize immediate and long-term results for their safety initiatives. Our clients can choose among several options for building internal expertise.
One example is BST’s training and certification of Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) Specialists. BBS Specialists have the expertise to assess process status and effectiveness through site location visits and thus provide steering committees with recommendations that sustain an initiative’s vision and focus.
BST also offers a wide array of additional supporting components, from troubleshooting consulting sessions to workshops for users to leadership development for supervisors, to maximize BAPP’s immediate effectiveness as well as its long-term sustainability.
BAPP® Planning and Assessment
Your BST team will help you with all aspects of planning and assessment, providing the expertise needed to:
- Lead a planning meeting
- Utilize BST’s Facilitator Selection Tool, a guideline and candidate evaluation tool developed by BST to assist in selecting the right person to lead the implementation.
- Administer BST’s Organizational Culture Assessment to establish a baseline picture of the factors specific to the organization that are driving the culture that produces safety outcomes. Where appropriate, the results of this predictive instrument can be explored through focus groups to inform implementation planning.
- Lead the Implementation Design Team in a workshop to finalize the implementation plan.
BAPP® Implementation
Your BST team will help you to implement the BAPP® system, providing expertise as needed to:
- Conduct training session(s) for site leadership that establish the context for the initiative, using the Blueprint for Safety Transformation™. If appropriate, this can be included in both the leadership training and supervisor training.
- Arrange for introductory BAPP® training for all employees. Training may be scheduled as part of existing meetings as a means of efficient time utilization.
- Guide the steering committee in the development of the Critical Behaviors Inventory® or CBI® tools.
- Work with the steering committee on how to conduct CBI® list buy-in meetings.
- Train the steering committee and others on observation and feedback skills.
- Work with the steering committee on the development of an observer-training course and to recruit, select, and train observers.
- Provide coaching on the observer training course.
- Provide training in BAPPTrack® Software, which enables organizations to capture, aggregate and analyze data about exposures in the working interface.
- Conduct advanced training for site leaders.
- Train the steering committee on evaluating observation quality.
- Work with the steering committee on setting up an observer feedback and coaching mechanism.
- Train the steering committee on analysis of BAPPTrack® software reports.
- Conduct a Sustainability Review.
- Consult with the steering committee on sustaining a mature process.
- Conduct Datalink analyses.
- Provide off-site services in support of the implementation.
