Safety Leadership Services: preparing safety leaders, from the boardroom to the plant floor, to effectively lead organisation-wide safety initiatives.

Leadership is critical to guiding and shaping safety improvement. We expect it from senior executives, but BST experience and research shows that leadership at all levels is a determining factor in outstanding safety performance.

BST processes and tools prepare employees at all levels to be leaders-to execute a safety strategy, shape organisational culture and coach for extraordinary results. As a consequence, organisations not only maximise their safety performance but they also build the executive bench strength they need to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Leadership Forecast Tool
BST’s Leadership Forecast Tool is a predictive, self-perception inventory of personal leadership style preferences that enables an individual to know and understands these elements and how they operate when he or she is “on automatic.”

Used in combination with Leadership Coaching, the Leadership Forecast Tool helps both the leader and the coach understand what motivates the leader’s behavior and decision-making so that he or she can build on personal strengths and compensate for constraints.

The data from the Leadership Forecast Tool is shared only between the coach and the leader.

Leadership Workshops
Tailored to each organisation—and to the work groups within each organisation-BST Leadership Workshops focus participants on concrete, shared goals and provide them with critical leadership tools and processes. The agenda for each workshop is determined through discussions with the organisation’s key leaders, as well as the results of leadership and cultural assessments, if available.

Leadership Workshops provide participants with a roadmap they can use to guide strategic thinking, as well as everyday leadership planning, around safety. As a result, participants move rapidly forward to create a culture capable of achieving and sustaining excellence in safety performance.

Leadership Coaching
When a leader has a clear understanding of what critical behaviors are important for him or her to perform and how they are related to the end point objective, the stage is set for growth, both for the individual and for his or her work group. That is why Leadership Coaching is so often a component of successful, sustainable safety initiatives.

BST delivers theses outcomes through one-on-one performance coaching with an experienced, objective behavioural consultant.

Leader Behavioral Observation and Feedback
One of the great difficulties of changing behavior is that useful and timely feedback is so very rare. And because the significant cognitive component of leadership skills makes them so challenging to track, most people in leadership roles lack the meaningful input they need to enhance desired behavior and identify and overcome unproductive behavior.

BST’s Leader Behavioral Observation and Feedback provides a flexible system for leadership skills data collection and feedback that directly addresses this need.

Leadership Skills Development System
It’s one thing to tell an employee what needs to be done to minimise exposures. That’s managing. It’s quite another thing to motivate employees to take ownership of safety performance. That’s leadership.

BST’s Leadership Skills Development System is an instructor-led, peer-sustained leadership development approach for supervisors and managers. It is based on BST research and experience regarding the nine organisational factors that are predictive of safety performance.

Leadership Assessment
In working with hundreds of companies over the years, BST has found that certain management and leadership practices recur across those organisations that have outstanding safety performance. Our Leadership Assessment is designed to measure these critical areas of leadership capability.

The Leadership Assessment gives normed, percentile feedback to leaders on how others perceive their execution of seven safety leadership best practices and four dimensions of transformational leadership.

Organisational Culture Assessment
The Organisational Culture Assessment is a critical tool for measuring an organisation's readiness for change. It assesses nine factors known to underlie positive organisational performance in environment, safety and health. Using their organisation's Organisational Culture Assessment results, senior executives can determine their organisation's strengths and weaknesses with respect to the factors and anticipate at what level, where and why resistance can be expected.
